Miss Julie: Reimagined (2024)

UP Dulaang Laboratoryo

Director, Dramaturg, Playwright

Photos by Vlad Gonzales and Quinea Babas Building on Strindberg’s “battle of the sexes”, a layer of cultural differences between master and servant (colonizer and colonized) was added.

We expanded upon the role of Kristin, a background character who seems to permit many of society’s ills against her. By reimagining her as Kristina, a poor Filipina maid in a Chinese household, ‘intersectionality’ is a key theme that appears.

She is a Filipina in poverty, doubly vulnerable to the flaws of Miss Julie, a Gen Z Chinese-Filipino heiress to a billionaire’s real estate business; and her lover John, a driver whose Tutuban house mysteriously burned down.

Under the banner of UP Dulaang Laboratoryo, this play was staged for Theatre 143 (Directed Studies in Theatre Directing) in collaboration with Theatre 153 (Lighting Design).
